We are a group of proud Kannadiga IT professionals who have transitioned from "Kannada Barutha??" to "Kannada Baruthe!!". We are proud about our language, culture and land and we want to help our non-Kannadiga friends realize "Serendipity called Karnataka and Kannada".

Our objectives
  • To promote spoken Kannada and not Kannada literature (we already have 8 Jnanpith Awardees)
  • To instill the desire to "Be a Kannadiga in Karnataka" among our non-Kannadiga friends

Why the name "Kannada Baruthe" ?? (I) know Kannada

It is a dig on two phrases which a Kannadiga (localite of Karnataka) finds very hard and depressing.

"Kannada baralla" !!! (I) don't know Kannada
This is the first and the only Kannada phrase any non Kannadiga learns. While it is probably good for a non Kannadiga to initially learn this phrase, it is sad that they don't go beyond it.

"Kannada barutha?" Do you know Kannada?
Not all Kannadiga's, especially in cities like Bengaluru speak Kannada in public, they seem to have inhibitions using the local language publically. Places like Bengaluru with a high influx of migrants are a wonderful set-up to promote the language, unfortunately those who know the language themselves are skeptical of using it, let alone growing it.
The dilution and increasing absence of Kannada in metro parts of Karnataka could also be a result of the nature of Kannadiga's. We are known to be very docile, helpful and non controversial. These very qualities seem to be both boon and a bane, we have become so accommodative that we have compromised our identity. There is an uncertainty about the use of Kannada so deep routed that a Kannadiga will enquire with any stranger (even if it is a localitie) if they know Kannada (Kannada Barutha?) before initiating a discussion in Kannada. While it is comforting that this malice is not spreading in non urbanized parts of Karnataka, it is sad that the opportunity to promote and grow Kannada in places like Bengaluru is being lost.

We want to bring some solace to Kannadiga's by tackling these two phrases : "Kannada baralla" and "Kannada barutha?"

For friends interested to learn Kannada, this initiative is to encourage them to move from "Kannada Baralla" to "Kannada Baruthe" so that they can closely relate to the land, language and locals here. Kannada is an extremely simple and also the richest regional language with 8 Jnanpith Awards. This site and our android app (Kannada Baruthe) is an effective tool for them to try spoken Kannada.

For fellow Kannadigas, while we don't want to promote any communal / cultural disharmony and want to retain the docile nature of Kannadigas intact we want to showcase speaking Kannada in public and teaching Kannada is cool. We are not language fanatics but we feel the need to increase awareness about our language and culture. And, the way to do that is to first feel proud of our language and use it without inhibitions and then teach it to our friends interested to learn Kannada. This site and our android app (Kannada Baruthe)is an effective means to help such a noble cause to spread the spirit of friendship and create an inclusive society.
